Taking his record to three wins in four starts, Volatile turned in a stunning display to record a near eight-length victory at Oaklawn on Friday, April 24.
The Phoenix Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm owned colt clocked some sensational fractionals on the way to clocking the fastest six furlongs of the Arkansas track’s meet. In a career-best performance, the son of Violence covered the final eighth of a mile in a rapid 11.4 before stopping the race clock at 1:08.48.
Making his four-year-old debut, the grey broke well from gate five and was up with the early pace. Jockey Ricardo Santana Junior settled his mount into a nice rhythm before being content for fellow market principal Strike That to take up the running. Sitting just outside the leader and heading through the turn, it became clear tat Volatile was travelling the best of the field. At the top of the stretch, Santana Junior asked his partner to go and win his race. Quickly accelerating the Steve Asmussen trainee soon opened up clear daylight to his rivals, so much so that Santana Junior had the luxury of giving the colt a few well-deserved pats down the neck as they won eased down.
