More Than Ready filly Make The Boys Wink is the latest winner from the Phoenix Thoroughbreds’ breeding program as she carried the Phoenix colours to victory at Ellis Park on Sunday (August 13).
The Dubai-based firm’s bloodstock operation has been enjoying plenty of success recently, with the Brendan Walsh trainee adding her name to the ever-increasing list of winners in some style at the Pea Patch. The filly’s victory came during the same weekend that Phoenix celebrated another black-type success for their wide-reaching breeding efforts thanks to Tiz Invincible’s win in the Listed Rosebud Stakes in Australia. Make The Boys Wink’s impressive score is the fifth winner in the last 30 days to be produced by the G1 winning breeders.
Sent off as the favourite, the three-year-old didn’t disappoint. Jockey Rafael Bejarano positioned his mount towards the rear of the field, allowing his main market rival to set the fractions. There the pair sat before sweeping effortlessly into contention, entering the turn. Once the field straightened, the rider asked for maximum effort and Make The Boys Wink changed gear and charged home to win by two and a half lengths eased down.
She’ll now likely head to Kentucky Downs for her next start.
