Gronkowski & Axelrod aimed at the Saudi Cup

Speaking at a launch event for the new Saudi Cup Phoenix Thoroughbreds Vice President Tom Ludt reiterated the innovative investment fund’s plan to run both Gronkowski and Axelrod in the Riyadh contest.

Set to become the richest race in the World, the latest addition to the Racing calendar has been on the agenda of the Dubai based group ever since the Dubai World Cup where Gronkowski bounced back to form to finished second to Thunder Snow and Axelrod ran a very credible race in midfield. In the case of “Gronk” the owners plan to use the February date as the middle leg of an ambitious winter campaign for the son on Lonhro that will see the colt take in the Pegasus and having another crack at the Meydan showpiece.

Phoenix Thoroghbreds intend to run both Gronkowski and Axelrod in the new Saudi Cup.

Outlining the plan in front of the World’s media at Saratoga Ludt said:

“Obviously Phoenix has jumped into the international market in a big way, and we are very supportive of the international game. Things like this are what the game is all about, and we will be extremely supportive. Gronkowski and Axelrod are both sitting in Dubai right now resting and getting ready to get back to full form, and our intention is to have both of those run. We are very excited, and we think this is what the international game needs. We’re international players, so we’re very much supportive and god willing if there good they’ll be there, if not we’ll find someone else!”

The Saudi Cup will take place over 1800m (9f) on February 29th with$20mllion on offer in prize money. For more information about the new race click here.
